Our History

East Side Main Street

Weisbrod Hospital construction began in 1937, using money and land donated by the hospital’s namesake, George Weisbrod, a local rancher and vice president of the First National Bank of Eads. He was known as a man who never hesitated to help someone in need and in his final wish made one the largest donations . His intention with this philanthropic endeavor was to create “a legacy to benefit humanity in means and ways of relieving suffering human beings.”

The Works Progress Administration planned to start construction in late 1937, but the opening of the hospital was delayed due to the Dust Bowl and our Country’s engagement with World War II. It wasn’t until April 1943 when the new medical facility finally opened its doors under the direction of Dr. Ralph E. Irish.

The hospital has undergone several improvements since then, including being incorporated into a full hospital district in 1963 and adding two wings, one on the north and one on the south end of the original structure, which brought several modern improvements.

Today Weisbrod Health includes a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital, Rural Health Clinic and Dental Clinic. Weisbrod Health also operates Kiowa County’s ambulance service serving the needs of county residents and people passing through.

At Weisbrod Hospital we strive to ensure that every patient receives the highest standard of care close to home in a healing environment.
