Loraine Saffer shared her story

Loraine and Roger Saffer have both experienced health issues that, were it not for having Weisbrod in the community, Loraine shared, “could have turned out differently.”   “It’s the lifeblood of the community. Whether you or a loved one is experiencing a heart attack or suffered a stroke, having a hospital nearby makes all the difference.”

In addition to impressing how important Loraine feels about access to emergency medicine close to home, she also shared that both her parents and in-laws, even though they did not live in Eads, came to the community to spend the end of their lives in the hospital’s extended care unit. “Anyone with aging parents or a loved one knows the importance of having them close,” said Loraine.  “It makes a difference in their quality of life, being able to see family members regularly, being surrounded by familiar faces, and with that, having caregivers treat our parents like their own family is something we will always be grateful for.”

Aside from the personal benefit that Loraine and her family have gained from the District, she also shared her thoughts about what Weisbrod means in the bigger picture beyond patient care. “Investing in the hospital is also a way of sustaining our community. Without it, there is no incentive for our young people to stay or come back to our community. If you look at it, the minor inconvenience of a tax is small compared to driving two and half hours away, especially when minutes matter, and you’re at the mercy of other people to get the help you need.

Loraine believes the Kiowa County Hospital District is “the security of growing our community and the health and welfare of our families.”
